Unfortunately, before the weapons were delivered, Pope Romanus was deposed and subsequently died, all in the period of four months after his ascension to the papal throne. His successor, Pope Theodore II who served an even briefer 20 day stint as pope wanted nothing to do with Romanus and simply sold these weapons on the open market to try and recoup some of the cost of their manufacture.\n\nThe mercenaries who purchased these halberds jokingly referred to them as the \"Pope's Teeth\" and the name has stayed with the polearms wherever they have gone."
