Eric von Könnenberg\nand Pierre de Hammais\n\n The principal sources of material on the Great Race are the Pnakotic Manuscripts, which have been attributed to the Great Race as their surviving records, and the Celaeno Fragments, which were collected by Professor Laban Shrewsbury from material located in a library on a planet of the star Celaeno. The origin of this library is mysterious, but is definitely not records left by the Great Race itself. It is often difficult to reconcile these two sources, but a plausible and mutually compatible version can be constructed. \n The Celaeno Fragments make it clear that the Great Race had existed on at least several different planets of our universe and others billions of years before the recorded history of the planet Earth. Prior to their advent on Earth, approximately 600,000,000 years ago, they inhabited the world known in the Eltdown Shards as Yith, and according to the Pnakotic Manuscripts, in some unknown bodily form, since their true form was as a free mind, somewhat akin to a shaft of light. Yith is described as dying at the time of their migration, and black and dead by 150,000,000 years ago. Unfortunately, the Manuscripts describe Yith's location with an ambiguous word which could place it on the opposite side of our own galaxy, in a distant galaxy, or even in intergalactic space. There are rumors to the effect that Yith exists far beyond the planet Yuggoth (known as Pluto here on Earth), a member of our own solar system, but substantiating evidence is still forthcoming. \n They migrated en masse to Earth and displaced the minds of a race of rugose cones which had inhabited and ruled the Earth since 1,000,000,000 B.C., and remained in these forms until some time between 150,000,000 years ago, and 50,000 years ago. \n At this point the Celaeno Fragments and the Pnakotic Manuscripts appear to differ. The latter gives the impression that they left the bodies of the cone-shaped race in their mental form, and displaced the minds of the beetle race immediately following mankind on Earth (somewhat after 50,000 A.D.), thus simply not existing for the period of man's sojourn here on Earth. The Fragments, however, indicate that they existed elsewhere in time and space during this period. Thus a mutually compatible version must assume that the Manuscripts merely neglected to describe this period in the Great Race's history. \n Once again, in regards to the Great Race's departure from the planet Earth, the two sources of information differ. According to the Pnakotic Manuscripts, the Great Race migrated to the planet Mercury, closer to the aging sun as the Earth cooled and grew closer to its final moment of sustaining intelligent life forms. On Mercury they displaced the minds of a race of bulbous vegetable entities. The Celaeno Fragments state that the Great Race first traveled to the planet Jupiter and then later, to the planet of a dark star in the constellation Taurus. They are located there during the present era of their history, but are contemplating their possible return through time and space to Earth because the dark star is dying. \n Their departure from the planet Earth may be connected with the wars between the Elder Gods and the Great Old Ones, since the Fragments state that this was the cause of their departure. The Manuscripts indicate clearly that their departing the bodies of the cone-shaped race was caused by a polypous race, which they had originally driven underground, but the Great Race had grown soft in their security and were threatened with an uprising of the polypous race. \n Beyond their tenure of the planet of the dark star, the Great Race's history is completely unknown to us. And most of what we do know of their history is fragmentary. We can only hope that further research can provide more complete and accurate knowledge of the history of this most fascinating of races. \n"
